Blauvelt, New York is an unincorporated village and Census-designated locality, formerly called Greenbush and later Blauvelt, on the town of New Hope, Orange County, New York. It is situated northwest of Tappan and east of Orangeberg, north of Central Nyack and west of Pearl River. There are two roads that cross the Village, each of which is four miles long. The north-south route crosses the road to New Hope, while the east-west route crosses the road from New Hope to Blauvelt, where it becomes another four miles long. The roads that border Blauvelt, New York are two miles long and run parallel to the North Eastern Tollway, which is one hundred and thirty-three miles long and leads from New York City to Buffalo. Blauvelt was named after a Blauvelt Park located in Greenbush, New York. There were originally two parks in this area, but the area was largely rural until the turn of the twentieth century. By this time, Greenbush was rapidly growing into a thriving urban center. The area was developed, and the Park was expanded, both by a group of investors who wanted to create an oasis in a desert, and by the Town of Greenbush itself. A number of hotels, shops, and stores eventually occupied the Park, which was developed by the Town of Greenbush. Today, the Park is owned by the State of New York. The population in Blauvelt, New York was at its greatest in the late nineteen seventies, when there were more than thirty-five thousand people living in the Village. There are several historic homes in the neighborhood, many of which have been preserved through the efforts of the United States Department of Education and other agencies. A number of the homes date back to the mid nineteenth century, with others dating from the thirties and for a few years. Of particular interest to tourists are the two historic houses on the North-South route, Blauvelt and Greenbush Road, as well as the Old House at Blauvelt. and the Bayside Mansion. The Old House at Blauvelt was built in 1832 and has the distinction of being the oldest house in Orange County. In addition, there is the Blauvelt Theater, an early model of which opened its doors in 1866 and closed ten years later.
